It's my birthday, and I'll cook if I want to.

My birthday was yesterday (yay!), and among other lovely cards, trinkets, and goodies (many food- and cooking-related) I received in the mail from friends and loved ones, my mom sent a box full of culinary decadence...an assortment of items I've always teetered on the edge of buying but have found too expensive to buy for myself:
  • Silpat - who knew a baking sheet liner could cost so much? This will be perfect for those hard-to-pick-up cookies (that shatter upon contact) and other sticky desserts.
  • Dried mushrooms galore - porcinis, chanterelles, and plump little morels...the box was so fragrant with their umami goodness. Just in time for braising and stewing season!
  • Whole vanilla beans - these will make a heavenly crème Anglaise to sit under a piece of cake, top a hot pie, or just eat with a spoon.
I don't even know what to cook first! Spoiled rotten.
