The weather in D.C. has been warming up -- temperatures hold steady in the mid-60s and even reach into the upper 80s on a few occasions, white skirts and shoes emerge from their long winter hibernation, accompanied by one of the surest signs that summer is coming: lines outside ice cream stores.
Over the weekend I had my first taste of a lovely little gelateria a short walk from Gallery Place (actually, across from the Archives/Navy Memorial Metro stop): Pitango Gelato. With locations also in Penn Quarter, Logan Circle, Fells Point (in Baltimore), and Reston Town Center, Pitango specializes in using fresh, organic ingredients to make your wildest dreams come true.
Five bucks will get you an enormous cone with two flavors: I had a Sicilian Almond on a Vanilla Chocolate Chip stracciatella. It was toasty, buttery, rich, velvety, studded with tiny bursts of bittersweet chocolate...everything I wanted my dessert to be. I was too impatient to eat another bite to hold still for the photo.
